Discover Shekarchi Bar & Grill

If you’re wandering around downtown Los Angeles looking for a hearty, satisfying meal that feels both comforting and elevated, Shekarchi Bar & Grill at Shekarchi Bar & Grill, 920 S Olive St, Los Angeles, CA 90015, United States, is one of those places that quietly wins you over. I’ve visited more than once-once for a casual weekday lunch and again on a busy Saturday night-and both times the experience felt consistent, warm, and genuinely memorable.

The first thing that stands out is the aroma. The scent of charcoal-grilled meats hits you before the menu even lands on the table. Persian cuisine is known for its balance of spices, herbs, and slow-cooked techniques, and here that tradition feels respected rather than rushed. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, diners increasingly value authenticity and global flavors, and you can see why when you taste dishes prepared with this level of care.

On my first visit, I ordered the koobideh kebab platter. The ground beef was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned, served alongside saffron rice that carried a subtle floral note. Saffron, often called the world’s most expensive spice by weight, isn’t used lightly in traditional Persian cooking. Here, it’s not overpowering-it’s balanced. That balance is something culinary experts often describe as central to Middle Eastern gastronomy: bold yet harmonious flavors layered thoughtfully rather than piled on.

The menu is broad without feeling overwhelming. You’ll find chicken barg, lamb chops, grilled salmon, and vegetarian-friendly options like falafel and fresh salads. During my second visit, I tried the lamb shank, slow-cooked until the meat slipped effortlessly off the bone. It was rich and comforting, especially paired with warm lavash bread. The preparation process-marinating, grilling over open flame, and resting the meat properly-shows attention to technique. Any chef trained in classical grilling methods will tell you that resting meat preserves juices, and here it clearly makes a difference.

Service is another strong point. On a busy weekend evening, I noticed how efficiently the staff handled a full dining room. Orders came out accurately, and water glasses were refilled without having to ask. Reviews from regular customers often highlight this consistency, and in my experience, that reputation holds up. It’s the kind of place where servers explain dishes patiently, especially if you’re new to Persian cuisine.

Location-wise, being on S Olive Street makes it convenient for office workers during lunch and for pre-theater dinners in downtown LA. Parking in the area can be typical for the city-sometimes limited-so planning ahead helps. That said, its central location adds to its appeal for both locals and visitors exploring nearby hotels and entertainment spots.

Another standout detail is portion size. The plates are generous, easily shareable, which aligns with the communal dining style common in Persian culture. Sharing platters, sampling different kebabs, and passing around appetizers creates a social atmosphere that feels welcoming rather than formal. Food scholars often note that communal meals strengthen connection, and you can feel that dynamic at neighboring tables.

In terms of pricing, it sits comfortably in the mid-range for downtown Los Angeles. Considering the quality of ingredients, the careful preparation, and the portion sizes, it feels fair. While I can’t verify sourcing for every ingredient, the freshness of the herbs and the quality of the meats suggest strong supplier relationships, something reputable restaurants prioritize to maintain standards.

If you’re scanning reviews before choosing a spot, you’ll notice many diners mention the flavorful rice, tender kebabs, and reliable service. Based on my visits, those comments are accurate. Whether you’re craving grilled meats, aromatic basmati rice, or simply a dependable dinner in downtown LA, this grill and bar delivers a satisfying, well-rounded dining experience that feels both authentic and approachable.

  • I love me some good Persian food. Add a beautiful establishment and a tantalizing menu and I’m so there. In town with my family (husband and 2 elementary age kids) and I zeroed in this spot super quick. Armin, the manager, is a gem: kind, friendly, outgoing, personable, generous and in charge. He was very very kind with my children, taking an interest in engaging with them and us. The food didn’t disappoint. We are not Persian btw, but my daughter ordered falafel for the first time and she loved it. The bbq chicken wrap, hummus veggie wrap and beef wrap were delicious. The fries are perfection. Everyone in my family were happy and satisfied. This place should be busier for lunch on a Saturday. Don’t let the 15 min walk from Pico and Figueroa discourage anyone, if anything you’ll work up an appetite. The ingredients are fresh and it’s noticeable. They have a nice bar area. Both booths and regular tables. I highly recommend to any and all.

  • Absolutely outstanding. The Sultani was hands down the best I’ve ever had, perfectly cooked, juicy, and full of flavor. The quality and care in the food really shines through. Highly recommend this spot if you’re craving authentic Persian cuisine

  • We thought we were coming to Sadie's Pizzeria but realised on arrival it's part of Shekarchi. Quickly greeted on entry, we joined our friends already seated at the table with menus. We all ordered our respective pizzas and drinks, which had a choice of different bases including cauliflower. Intrigued, a few of us chose this option. The pizzas all had thin bases. My Mediterranean was crunchy on the edges but soft and gooey in the middle from the melted cheese. I really like the briny olives and tangy tomato flavours combined. The cauliflower base has a mild taste and unique texture. My colleagues enjoyed their respective choices and the rating reflects our collective judgment. There were few diners when we were there but the restaurant has capacity for big celebrations with many seats and a small dance floor. Service was attentive at the table but they would only split payments across 2 cards. This was awkward for the 5 of us afterwards. Conclusion: good pizzas in an exotic place offering Mediterranean fare. We would return if in the area, but not go out of our way to revisit.

  • My parents favorite place to stop by and eat when we are in the middle of LA. We always get the same thing idk what it is called but it’s like grilled chicken, yellow rice with white rice and the bread is so thin it’s delicious with butter. The cucumber yogurt is delicious and fresh.
